Dinah Washington once stated "I can sing anything, anything at all". In Dinah's case this is all too true. Whether she sang blues, jazz, pop or R&B, she was clearly at ease and in command. Her singing voice, emphatically emotional and with a diamond hard edge, was somehow in keeping with whatever she sang, adding resonance to blues and profound songs, acerbic wit to trite songs, and making many love songs unbearably moving. Dinah's blues and ballad singing became a major influence for a whole generation of singers; she was the major voice of the burgeoning, but as yet untitled, soul movement.
